I was looking through some websites that I have saved to my favorite and came up this one that explaines how to make your own Mancala game.
I did this when my two older kids were probably 7 and 8. It is a great game and they were occupied with it for hours at a time and actually didn't really get tired of the game like kids usually do. '
The website explaines how to plain the game if you don't already know. Give it a try and let me know how you like it.

The General and Monaville, Texas by Joe G. Bax
I received this book from Reviewthebook.com and did not receive any money for this review nor am I required to write a positive review.
The General and Monaville, Texas is about a young boy named John Ross Wilhite growing up in Texas post Civil War. His grandfather was a General in the war fighting for the south but has since put that behind him. He has set his slaves free and given most of them land as sharecroppers. He takes a genuine interest in them expecially Blue for who the General sets up a blacksmith shop in the town.
John Ross is growing up and is starting to get interested in girls expecially his friend Afton. Coming from a small town they all start asking him about his "friend Afton".
Not everyone is willing to let the loss of the Civil War go to the wayside and with the help of the District Attorney and the drunken Sheriff a group forms the local Klan. They don't take kindly to the former slaves being treated as equals and start to cause some trouble in the area having deadly consequences.
And if the Klan isn't enough to handle a former slave show up to take revenge out on the General.
This book isn't very long , only 168 pages, but it sure packs a punch, I found myself not being able to put the book down. The book does end with somewhat of a mystery though and i would love to read more about John Ross and the town of Monaville, Texas.

Thankful Thursday

I am thankful today for the internet. Without the internet, we would have not been able to homeschool our children. I am thankful for all the free resources that have been made avavilable through the internet that have enabled us to school our children and not gone completely broke.
One such resource that I just came across in my email today from Clickschooling.com's newsletter (which is a great resource in itself) was The Literate Mother. This site gives ratings on books that your children may want to read. They rate on sex, violence, language and adult themes.
For alot of homeschool freebies check out The Old Schoolhouse Magazines Freebie Directory. There is something for everyone.

Burned : A Tragic Mystery by J. A. Nevling
Jim and Sharon seemed to have the whole America dream going for them. They had a nice home and had a wonderful baby girl. But their dream turns into a nightmare in one instance as a horrible accident turns everything to ash.
Most of this book is told in the present with flash backs to the reason that Sharon and Jim are separated and living 100's of mile apart. Sharon has taken a job as an accountant at Prescott Inc. and is on the verge of starting an affair with her boss. He assigns her the task of checking the accounts when an audit is announced. While in the office here the files are kept she discovers a secret door and can swear that someone is spying on her. She discovers a secret that she feels could be the reason someone is trying to kill her.
I found this a very interesting mystery and I really had no Idea who was the culprit till the very end. I did find Sharon's character unlikable even though I really wanted to like her. That didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book though.

Pennywise by Jill Brock
This is a funny mystery written by Jill Brock.
Odessa Wilkes's life has spiraled out of control when she loses her job and is dumped by her boyfriend all in one day. She is stuck baking for her ovebearing sister at the family restaurant for a living.
Odessa's life is further thrown for a loop when her best friend Maggie comes into the restaurant
,with her son Rocket in tow, crying that her husband , Roger, has disappeared. After much drama and pleading on Maggie's part Odessa agrees to help find the missing Roger.
The plot thickens after Maggie finds some insurance files that Roger has signed which is unusual since he wasn't involved in that aspect of the job anymore. She also found a mysterious list of numbers.
So Odessa and Maggie start their search for Roger armed with their copy of 'Private Invesigating for Dummies' and helped or hendered by a wide assortment of characters from Odessa's Aunt Renne to the sinister Hamm.
I really enjoyed this book and will be seeking out other books by this author. I recieved this book through reviewthebook.com for free and I am not required to write a favorable review.

Thankful Thursday

I wanted to join this meme because I have been tending not to be thankful for much lately.
1. I am thankful for a husband that is willing to do whatever he needs to to provide for my daughter and myself even if it means being away for Easter.
2. I am thankful for a Savior that loves me no matter what.
If you want to join in this meme go to Spiritually Unequal Marriage who is hosting this month.

Sorry I Have been neglecting this Blog
I feel that I have been neglecting this blog as I have been mainly work on my book blog A Room without Books is Empty. I have been busy finding books to review and of course reading and reading other blogs about books and feel I haven't been giving this blog as much attention as I should. I will be posting a few cross over posts between my other blog and here.
I just finished review on Living the Resurrection by Eugene Peterson that you can find on the other blog.
I went to the Rite Aid Drugstore yesterday to get my refills. I had called to see how much they were. wow could you believe that they were $150 for the month. Since we are in between medical coverage now that left us without coverage for my pills. I requested that they just give me one weeks worth. When I went to pick them up I was pleasantly surprised that the pharmicist had done some math and figured out if I signed up for they prescription savings card I could get my full months prescription for only 8.99 per prescription for a total of $27 dollars. Wow what a difference. If you are interested the plan is outlined here.
Easter is this Sunday and for school this week Hannah is doing a unit study on Easter. She is reading scripture and listening to Handel's Messiah and learning about Handel. She is also learning about the history of Easter. We got the unit study from The teaching Home Magazine in their newsletter they send out. You can sing up for the newsletter here.
Hope everyone is haveing a good week.

Boys, Beauty & Betrayal by JC Conrad-Ellis
Tanisha Carlson is a typical 14 year old girl. Well really not so typical as she is in Honors classes in middle school and is a good athelete. Tanisha lives with her mother and three brothers in a suburb of Chicago but not in one of the fancier parts of town. She is very much aware of her position in life and is constantly trying to make herself seem to have more than she actually does.
Tanisha seems to have a good relationship with her brothers (as much as a teenage girl can have with brothers) as there seem to be an us against them mentality fo the children against the mom. Tanisha even goes as far as calling her mother by her first name behind her back.
Tanisha has a secret at the beginning of the book that she doesn't want her friends to find out about. This situation is later resolved in the book and her friends don't find out.
Her mother also is hiding a secret that she doesn't want anyone especially Tanisha to find out about but seems to come to a good conclusion later in the story.
Tanisha and her friends are constantly worried about what others are thinking of them, what the boys are thinking of them, how their clothes makes them look.
While I read this it made me remember those days in middle shcool and high school when I thought I would die because I didn't have the right clothes or I wasn't wearing the right makeup or that I wasn't popluar enough. I thought that the author captures the whole teenage angst thing very well.
I read this book with the intention of handing it over to my 14 year old daughter to read . There is some mild language and some mild sexual innuendo so I will discuss that with her before I let her read it but I am sure that she will enjoy it. Tanisha does tell quite a few white lies and I will discuss that with my daughter as well.

Feeding my Addiction
I have been busy signing up and joining book reviewers programs and blogs. This is a great way to get free books to read and all I have to do is read them and comment on them. WOW!! I hope to find some gems in the lot and also meet alot of great people along the way. If you are interested I have several badges on my sidebar that you can click on and join.
This weekend is suppose to be beautiful. Unfortunately Hannah was sick yesterday and I am not sure if she will be much better today. She suffers from tonsilitis but it never makes it to strep throat which it needs to do to get them out (I think 3 times in one year). So she has to put up with this several times a year. I think Spring and Summer are the worst times to be sick.
I made bubble pizza last night. It is just hamburger and spaghetti sauce poured over biscuits and baked at 400 degrees for about 10minutes then add cheese and baked for another 5 minutes. (in a 13 x 9 pan) make sure you grease your pan.
Tonight is pork chop bake. I plan on cooking out tomorrow when my two oldest come to visit.
